Is snorkeling in Bonaire dangerous?
We often get asked whether snorkeling in Bonaire is dangerous. The answer is no—snorkeling in Bonaire is generally very safe. However, as with any water sport, there are a few things to keep in mind. Here’s a list of tips to ensure your snorkeling adventure is both enjoyable and safe.
Tips for a safe snorkeling adventure
- Ensure that your snorkeling equipment fits well and functions properly. A poorly fitting mask can leak, and a defective snorkel can obstruct your breathing. Always check your equipment before entering the water
- While snorkeling, you will often be exposed to the sun’s UV rays. To protect yourself, consider wearing a rash guard or wetsuit. Don’t forget to apply waterproof sunscreen!
- Some snorkeling locations may have strong currents. It’s important to be aware of the current conditions and avoid swimming too far from the shore
- Avoid contact with coral and sea urchins. Coral can be very sharp, and sea urchin spines can cause injuries. Coral may also contain toxins that can lead to infections if you get injured
- Although most marine creatures are harmless, some can pose a risk, such as fire worms and certain types of jellyfish. Do not touch marine life and be careful where you place your hands and feet
